Texas Southern University, or TSU for short, is a historically black university located in Houston, which is the largest city in the US state of Texas and the 4th largest city in USA, having a population estimated at a number of more than 2 000 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census. Houston is also the seat of Harris County and the economic center of the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area, which is the 6th largest metropolitan area in the States, having more than 5 million people, living within its limits.
TSU was established in March, 1947, by the Texas Legislature, first starting as Texas State University for Negroes, and it is one of the only 4 ''independent'' public universities in the state, and one of the largest and most comprehensive HBCU in the nation. The institution is academically organized into 10 colleges and schools, through which it offers its students, educational programs in various fields of study.
Athletics
The athletic teams from Texas Southern University are known as the TSU Tigers, which compete in NCAA Division I, in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), in various sports for both men and women, including in basketball, baseball, football, tennis, golf, softball, volleyball and track and field. TSU's best known rivals are Grambling State University, Prairie View A&M, Southern University and Jackson State University. The distinctive colors of the Tigers are maroon and gray.
